Rockford man pleads guilty to robbing post office; sentencing set for July

A Rockford man has pleaded guilty in federal court to robbing a local U.S. Post Office in May 2025. According to prosecutors, Anthony Johnson walked from his home to the post office and demanded money from a clerk, taking about $219 before fleeing through nearby backyards.

Johnson, 59, admitted guilt on Monday to one count of robbing money from the United States. He faces up to ten years in federal prison. Sentencing is scheduled for July 8, 2026, at 1:30 p.m., presided over by U.S. District Judge Iain D. Johnston.

The announcement was made by Andrew S. Boutros, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Mary T. Johnson, Acting Inspector in Charge of the Chicago Division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. The Rockford Police Department assisted with the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan S. Kim is representing the government.
