Simeon Cunningham has taken a bold step in the fight against workplace discrimination by filing a lawsuit against his former employer, alleging discrimination and harassment based on his sex and sexual orientation. On February 19, 2026, Cunningham filed this complaint in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois against McKibbon Hotel Management, Inc., seeking justice for what he claims was a hostile work environment that ultimately led to his wrongful termination.
Cunningham’s allegations are rooted in violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He contends that throughout his tenure at McKibbon Hotel Management, he was subjected to repeated homophobic slurs and derogatory comments from coworkers, which were not adequately addressed by management despite multiple reports. Cunningham, who identifies as a gay male, asserts that this harassment created an intolerable work environment. “Despite my repeated reports,” Cunningham stated in his complaint, “I was still subjected to a hostile work environment because of my sex and/or sexual orientation.”
The narrative began when Cunningham started working as a Front Desk Manager in January 2022 before transitioning to Assistant Housekeeping Manager in November 2022. The situation escalated in May 2025 when coworker Treyvonne LNU allegedly called him a homophobic slur. Despite reporting this incident to management, the harassment persisted. Another significant incident occurred on November 17, 2025, involving housekeeper Brandy Dyer, who admitted to using similar slurs against Cunningham. Although Dyer was terminated following this admission, Cunningham argues that the company failed to take comprehensive corrective action.
Cunningham further alleges retaliation from McKibbon Hotel Management after expressing concerns about the ongoing harassment. Following an email exchange with General Manager Craig LNU regarding his employment status, Cunningham claims he was forced out under false pretenses of resignation—a decision he contests vehemently. In his communication with Corporate Human Resources representatives Kiara Maccarone and Sebastian LNU, Cunningham clarified that he had never resigned but was instead seeking support amid continuous harassment.
In light of these events, Cunningham is pursuing various forms of relief from the court. His demands include back pay and benefits, compensatory damages for emotional distress, punitive damages for willful disregard of his rights under Title VII, and injunctive relief to prevent future occurrences within the company.
Representing Simeon Cunningham are attorneys Sophia K. Steere and Nathan C. Volheim from Sulaiman Law Group Ltd., based in Lombard, Illinois. The case is being heard under Case ID: 1:26-cv-01883.
