The Illinois Bar Journal reports on Apr. 6 that Land of Lincoln Legal Aid has launched new Mobile Justice Clinic vans to extend its services to rural areas in central and southern Illinois. The initiative adds to the organization’s five regional offices, four satellite offices, and a legal advice hotline, aiming to improve access to justice for residents across 65 counties.

The deployment of mobile justice vans is intended to address barriers faced by people living far from traditional legal aid centers. The vans will allow Land of Lincoln Legal Aid staff to reach communities that may otherwise have limited options for legal assistance.

According to the article, the idea for these mobile units was inspired by similar efforts from other organizations providing pop-up legal help after natural disasters. These included helping victims prepare insurance claims, apply for disaster relief benefits, and recover lost documents such as birth certificates and wills. Each van is equipped with two office spaces containing laptops, telephones, internet access, as well as amenities like a refrigerator and microwave. Staff can conduct client intake just as they would at fixed-location advice centers.
