A Rockford man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly robbing a post office in Rockford, Illinois, in May. The individual, Anthony M. Johnson, 58, faces one count of robbery involving a person with lawful charge of U.S. money and endangering that person’s life using a dangerous weapon. If convicted, Johnson could face up to 25 years in federal prison. An arraignment date in the U.S. District Court in Rockford has not yet been set.
The indictment was announced by Andrew S. Boutros, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Ruth Mendonça, Inspector in Charge of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service Chicago Division. The investigation received assistance from the Rockford Police Department and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan S. Kim.
It is important to note that an indictment is merely an accusation and does not serve as evidence of guilt. Johnson remains presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
