A man accused of robbing a bank in O’Fallon, Illinois, appeared in federal court last Wednesday to face a federal charge, according to a statement released on Mar. 30.
George E. Habermehl, Jr., age 62, is charged with one count of bank robbery after allegedly robbing a federally insured bank on Highway 50 in O’Fallon around 11:10 a.m. on March 20. The case highlights the swift response by local law enforcement and the cooperation between agencies.
U.S. Attorney Steven D. Weinhoeft said, “Anyone who robs a bank will face federal prison. The O’Fallon Police Department acted decisively. They released the suspect’s image immediately, mobilized the public’s tips, and brought this defendant into custody the very same day. That is outstanding police work and exactly the kind of strong partnership that delivers results for our community.”
According to the complaint filed against Habermehl, he approached a teller at the bank and presented a demand note before leaving with cash on foot. The O’Fallon Police Department quickly released images of the alleged suspect on social media and received several tips identifying Habermehl as the suspect. He was reportedly already on federal probation for bank robbery and had recently absconded prior to his arrest in East St. Louis.
FBI Springfield’s Acting Special Agent in Charge Karen Marinos said, “Protecting the integrity of our financial institutions and the safety of our citizens who work there is a top priority.” Marinos continued: “Thanks to the diligent investigative work and support of the O’Fallon Police Department, we are sending a clear message that these actions will not be tolerated in our community.”
Authorities remind that criminal complaints are allegations only; defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt in court.
The FBI Springfield Field Office is investigating with assistance from local police while Assistant U.S. Attorney Amanda Fischer prosecutes.
