A Chicago man has been sentenced to ten years in federal prison for illegally possessing a loaded handgun and using it in a shooting that seriously wounded another man.
According to authorities, Angel Sosa was found with a loaded semiautomatic handgun equipped with an extended magazine on June 8, 2021, in the Noble Square neighborhood. That evening, Sosa fired more than a dozen shots at a man near North Noble and West Walton Streets. The victim survived but sustained serious injuries. Police arrested Sosa near the scene of the incident, and he has remained in custody since his arrest.
At the time of the shooting, Sosa was on parole for a previous firearm-related felony conviction. He had also been convicted of multiple other felonies prior to this case.
Sosa, who is 27 years old and from Chicago, pleaded guilty earlier this year to illegal possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon. On December 4, 2025, U.S. District Judge Martha M. Pacold sentenced him to ten years in prison.
The sentencing was announced by Andrew S. Boutros, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Douglas S. DePodesta, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Office of the FBI. The Chicago Police Department assisted in the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Branka Cimesa represented the government.
