Attorney General Kwame Raoul warned Illinois residents on April 6 about a rise in fraudulent investment schemes appearing on Meta platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The alert highlights how scammers are using deceptive ads and deepfake technology to trick people into high-risk scams that can result in significant financial loss.

The warning is important as these scams target vulnerable individuals and use increasingly sophisticated methods to deceive them. Many victims are lured by promises of high returns or endorsements from well-known figures, only to lose their savings.

“There is a worrying trend of bad actors using social media to purposely lure consumers into investment groups intent on scamming them out of their hard-earned money,” Raoul said. “I recommend all Illinoisans who are regularly on social media platforms learn about these scams and review our tips to avoid becoming a victim of one of these sophisticated scams.”

Raoul outlined common tactics used in “pump and dump” schemes, where victims are enticed through ads featuring celebrities or trusted advisors—often without their consent—and pressured to join private chats where they receive misleading advice. These groups encourage investments in certain stocks or cryptocurrencies, which scammers then sell at inflated prices before disappearing with the profits. Other confidence scams involve building relationships with victims through fake investing platforms that appear legitimate but ultimately drain the victim’s funds.

To help protect themselves, consumers are urged to watch for red flags such as guaranteed returns, high-pressure sales tactics, celebrity endorsements generated by artificial intelligence, requests for cryptocurrency payments, and invitations to move conversations off mainstream social media onto encrypted apps. Attorney General Raoul advises verifying credentials through tools like FINRA’s BrokerCheck and consulting trusted professionals before making any investments.

Illinois residents should also be aware that most fraudulent transactions involving cryptocurrency cannot be reversed. If someone claims they can recover lost assets for a fee after an initial scam, this could be another attempt at fraud. The Attorney General encourages anyone who suspects they have been targeted by an investment scam to file a complaint via the office’s website or call one of its Consumer Fraud Hotlines.

The Illinois Attorney General has advocated for vulnerable groups including workers, immigrants and seniors according to the official website. The office handles thousands of consumer complaints each year according to the official website, aiming to protect consumers while promoting safer communities and addressing environmental issues according to the official website. Its advocacy extends across Illinois according to the official website and includes partnerships with law enforcement agencies supporting crime victims while promoting open government according to the official website. Services offered include complaint filing related both consumer frauds as well civil rights matters according to the official website.
